Resistance to slavery

During the time of slavery in Puerto Rico, like many other places that face’s slavery at the time, they had many slave revolts. Unlike many other countries at the time Puerto Ricans started their slave revolts rather late. The slave population increased from 2,000-15,000 in 1530-1560. The first slave revolt took place in 1514. Although there were probably many other slave revolts before, the most frequent slave revolts or most known slave revolts in Puerto Rico happened from 1775-1873. Towns like Guayama and Ponce were known for their slave revolts. Slaves would runaway finding cimarrones on mountainous regions on the island. Some would flee to other islands like the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Although Puerto Rico really started to revolt around 1775 they started trying to escape even when slavery started on the island. They tried to do anything they could to escape slavery and live freely, even though they mostly escaped to different parts of the Caribbean. Puerto Rico had many revolts against slavery but what’s a slave revolt without a revolt leader or conspirator. Puerto Rico’s most famous conspirator was Marcos Xiorro. Xiorro planned to attack multiple plantations but whose plan was aborted. There are even rumors that he requested aid from the Haitian military. This shows how even though it's a small island it still has the potential to do what's necessary to survive. This also shows how even the Tainos who were friendly and offered up anything they had don’t wanna be used as slaves.
